MA

"MA" was a passion project of mine following my first trip to Japan during the winter of 2025. It takes its name (and compositional philosophy) from "Ma", the Japanese concept of negative space in art. This piece served a largely experimental purpose as I explored concepts of silence, time, and 'absense' in the medium I was most familiar with at the time: the wind ensemble. The main theme of this work is based on the following Haiku:

Mist cloaks the glass bay

A heron speaks in wingbeats... 

I yearn for silence.
