About Me

Darren Binkowski is a San Diego-based composer and electronic musician who explores the complex relationship between nature, technology, and humanity. His work interprets the vast intricacies of the natural world with divine reverence–– alongside its complex relationship with technological advancement and human folly. Every work is a contradiction, an endless conversation between nature and humanity, mediated by software, synthesizers, and microphones. This conversation is multifaceted, daunting, and ever-changing. Engaging often feels crushing, maybe even cynical; Binkowski's music rejects this cynicism for an innate sense of whimsy, optimism, and hope, owing to his San Diego Heritage. 

His acoustic work is intently programmatic and eclectic, with bombastic highs, sensitive lows, and an idiosyncratic orchestration style that pulls from various disciplines of electronic music. "Diembee", his electronic project, is no different, with an 'all-concept album' discography (as of 2026) and a "Bouquet of Sounds" philosophy, with each project featuring intensely ornate sequences of sixty to eighty sounds each, from live instruments to video game sound fonts to dirty samples found in the backs of record stores.

Binkowski had been selected for commission by the soundSCAPE Composition and Performance exchange in Blonay, Switzerland, premiering Glass Soul Refractions at the Hindemith Music Center. Other honors include a first place selection at the Indiana Opus Composition Festival for Painting the Mountain in Marion, Indiana, first prize for the Jack Store Award for New Music in San Antonio, Texas, and a premiere of Cinnamon Tea by the downbeat award winning MiraCosta Oceanside Jazz Orchestra in Oceanside, California.

He is currently studying composition with Don Freund and Texu Kim at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, transferring from MiraCosta College in Oceanside. He currently holds a AA in Music with a focus in Jazz Saxophone, having studied previously with Steve Torok, Josias Miguel, and Matt Falker.
