"Coffee Cycle" is one of the simpler works of mine to understand. I love coffee dearly; to me, its not just a means of energy, but a daily ritual and a discipline that I practice and improve like any other craft. This trio gets its namesake from "Coffee Cycle", a small coffee roaster in the Pacific Beach neighborhood of San Diego to which this piece is dedicated to.
This piece is a musical interpretation of three different roasts of coffee, drawing lightly from the musicians I'd typically listen to when doing my pour-overs; Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and Julian Lage.
I: “Dark”
Region: Sumatra • Process: Wet-Hulled • Notes: Nutmeg, Plums • MASL: 1000-1400
Bitter, earthy, subtle and deep flavors. An acquired taste.
II: “Medium”
Region: Chiapas • Process: Honey • Notes: Caramel, Nougat • MASL: 1200-1600
Lush, yet mellow. Refreshing, yet mild. Confounding, yet slightly sweet, nutty, almost chocolate tasting. A pleasant and reliable brew.
III: “Light”
Fruity, intense, and more sour than bitter, like drinking a light smack to the face. Obvious overtones give way for deep, subtle aftertastes.
