My first (and to date only) orchestra work was written as an early exercise to familarize myself not only with the orchestra but with a different, more programmatic approach to form–– though its lack of harp diagrams certainly shows its age!
Despite the name, "Autumn's Passacaglia" is only very loosely based on the passacaglia form. The title is shared with an unfinished novella of mine of the same name; the musical form inspires and captures the plot of the novella, which inspires and captures the themes of this work; the idea of a single motive that 'spirals' downwards into various corruptions, increasing in intensity with each strain.
